Beautiful, thanks Mark! I'm trying to get myself a set of the famous artists course on ebay. Any idea what the difference is between the 50's print and the 60's?

Thanks,
George

Hey George - I don't really know. I only have the 1950 version and that's all I've seen. There is a pretty informative discussion of the FAC merits in the comments section of the last FAC post I did (part three). I don't know what the first year was but I assume it started well and gradually deteriorated...I generally would bet that the further you get through the 60s the worse the course gets, but that's just my guess. Other people like Steven Worth over at the ASIFA website might know more about it than I do...sorry I can't help you more! Hopefully someone will read your question and answer it here.

Thanks so much for posting these Mark! Two of the leg diagrams (the ones with the bones silhouetted) look the same as what appears in my '90 edition, but everything else is new (or old rather) and looks much more helpful. By the way, thanks again the previous FAC post - it really cleared up something that I was having trouble with.

Thanks Mark! I haven't had chance to study any of these as much as I would like, but knowing they're here for when I have the time is invaluable.

Thanks for providing a great resource!

George,
You really can't go wrong with any version. As the course progressed throughout the years it tried to mix the latest trends in illustration with basic fundamentals to stay relevant. It really depends on what interests you. Case in point I have one book from '54 that focused mostly on editorial & book illustration (the big markets at the time) with a huge spotlight on Norman Rockwell. My '67 version focuses on tv and other fields of art with a focus on Bob Peak type illustration (he had joined the faculty by this time.) I originally bought my copies separately thinking that the content did not change from year to year. I finally bought the full version which was from 1960 but I kept my other copies. For pure drawing instruction I would stick with any year between 1950-1960.

Full sets are usually expensive. If you have patience and are on a budget like myself try to buy them individually. The single books usually don't go for more than $10. Just make sure you purchase the commercial art version and not the painting or youth courses.
Hope this helps,
Kevin
